That's what Matt used to call big trucks when he was a little boy - Big Ucks. He was fascinated with them...and still is, quite frankly!
Well, this week, one of Matt's life dreams was fulfilled. He got to operate a big uck.
For those of you who haven't heard the news, we have just started building our first home. Matt is going to be doing most of the work himself throughout the project...
with help from his construction buddies. On Monday, the property became officially ours. By Thursday, we had the track hoe up and running to begin the excavation. As of Saturday evening, the basement is completely dug!
We'll keep you posted as things move along. The plan is to have the concrete poured this week, so we can start framing next week.
By the way, now that I've got this whole post put together, Matt took one look at it and said, "Well, that's not really a big uck. But I guess that's okay." What do I know?!?!?

We are so excited for you! Oh to have a house....where you can paint walls and do what you like!
That is so awesome! One question...what happens to all the dirt that is taken out of the ground? Where does it go? Also, how do you make sure that the basement part is deep enough and square enough?
I can't wait to see this progress more! By the way...I would love to help you do your template changes....i will forward you the email steph sent to me, and then when you have time, we can talk on the phone and I can walk you through it.

The dirt is piled all around the hole with room for the cement truck to drive between the piles and the hole. After the foundation is set up, most of the dirt gets pushed back down next to the cement walls - it's called back-filling. The rest of the dirt can be used to level our yard, or be hauled away. When the foundation is being laid, the workers need room to stand around the edges so when we dug the hole, we had to dig with a few extra feet on every side. That's the space that needs to be back-filled. Before we began digging, though, Matt and his guys had to go and measure out the placement of the house on the property. Then they hammered stakes into the ground, and spray-painted the lines for where to dig. So they looked for the stakes when they were digging (the orange paint was not visible because it snowed two inches the day they started digging).
